This calculator computes the overall thermal transmittance (U) of a multi-layer system. For each layer, you need to enter two key values:
Enter the values for up to six layers (use 0 for any layer that does not exist). The calculator sums the thermal resistances (thickness divided by conductivity) of all layers and then calculates the overall U-value by taking the reciprocal of that sum.
A lower U-value indicates better insulation, meaning less heat is transferred through the structure, while a higher U-value indicates more heat flow.
Real-Life Application: Consider a building wall composed of multiple layers, such as an exterior brick, an insulating layer, and interior plasterboard. By inputting the thickness and conductivity of each layer, you can determine the overall U-value of the wall. A lower U-value means the wall is more energy-efficient, helping to reduce heating or cooling costs.
